Why, how, and when did I realise I wanted to work in tech?

If you know me -or have read my last post- you’ll know that I’ve always been more attracted to the humanities: history, psychology, communication. I’m fascinated by human nature, our behaviour, passions, fears…

That’s why I get that question a lot: what made ME, a social sciences nerdie, shift towards technology?

To answer that we have to go back in time to 2019…

Embracing the Tech Startup Culture

Joining Acid Tango marked the beginning of my journey in tech marketing. I got to see firsthand how startups like Wallbox, Declarando, Yubick, Libeen, Wondo, and Thrive, among others, were created and scaled.

A few years later, I joined Pathmonk, an AI-powered marketing software. Over these years working in tech I’ve come to realise that, while each company has its unique approach, they all share some common traits that I like:

1. Continuous Innovation Mindset

One of the key things I observed in these companies was a continuous innovation mindset. They were always evolving, always updating their products, always looking for improvements.

The industry thrives on agility and quick iterations, which match my working style. I prefer releasing a minimum viable product and refining it through experimentation than spending weeks on having something super polished for ending up with just one shot that might fail. This approach keeps the work exciting and constantly pushes the boundaries of what's possible.

2. Data-Driven Decision Making

Tech digital platforms are inherently data-driven, using insights and analytics to guide product decisions, and that translates to their marketing. In contrast, many traditional companies often overlook the potential of data, relying on gut instinct or doing things the way they’ve always been done.

I’d never ever suggest a marketing strategy without looking at the data available, whether it's ours, from competitors, or the industry. Embracing a data-driven approach allows for more precise targeting, better customer understanding, and ultimately, more effective marketing strategies.

3. Culture of Efficiency

I particularly love this one.

Tech companies typically foster a culture of productivity and efficiency over simply clocking hours. Trust me, having worked in corporate environments, I've experienced this difference firsthand.

Tech companies tend to favour outcome-based work environments, where what you achieve matters more than how long you sit in a chair—thanks largely to the influence of developers. This approach leads to more meaningful work and a more motivated team. It’s a culture that values efficiency and innovation, which I find incredibly motivating.

4. Higher Flexibility

This ties in with my previous point. Since you don’t have to constantly prove your seat is warm, options like remote or hybrid work and flexible schedules are just part of the norm.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m the first to work overtime when things aren’t ready or to help a colleague. But I love that this flexibility goes both ways, encouraging greater accountability and a stronger sense of ownership.

5. More Horizontal Hierarchy

Another aspect of tech companies that I appreciate is their more horizontal hierarchy and reduced need to be constantly climbing the corporate ladder. These organisations often have less rigid structures, encouraging open communication and collaboration across all levels.

Without the barriers of a strict hierarchy, ideas can flow more freely, and everyone has a voice. Personally, I believe this environment leads to quicker decision-making and a stronger sense of community within the team.

6. Collaboration with Diverse Teams

Some of my most interesting conversations ever have been with UX designers. They understand user behaviour, dark psychology, and engagement strategies like no one else. I've also learned a great deal from developers, whose structured and rational approach to challenges is invaluable.

This kind of diverse collaboration is something you typically find in tech-related companies. Working alongside experts from different fields not only broadens your perspective but also enhances your problem-solving skills. It’s this blend of creativity and logic that makes working in tech so enriching and dynamic.

And you could argue, but can’t you have this in other types of companies? Sure, you can. But, from my experience, tech companies bring together an incredible mix of talented and multiskilled people that I haven’t seen in other environments.

7. Just a Better Corporate App Stack

If you know, you know 🙃

Once you’ve used Slack for messaging, going back to Microsoft Teams is almost unbearable. Trust me, I experienced this firsthand for a bit with a former client.

The app stack in tech companies and startups is just SO superior. Apps like Notion, Typeform, Monday, Canva, or simply Google Drive instead of rusty servers, make your work life so much easier and delightful -yes, delightful I said.

So, while it's astonishing that many companies still cling to outdated tools, this tech-forward approach is one of the things I enjoy the most of working in the industry.

There are many more reasons why working in tech excites me, but these are the ones that resonate the most. I’m confident that my professional future lies in this exciting field, which is why I’m specialising in this area. The innovation, collaboration, and constant growth make this industry the perfect fit for my career.
